In alcoholism due to thiamine deficiency can produce Wei Yi Branch syndrome (WK sign), the patient loses memory. The pathological lesion of the syndrome is in the hypothalamus, thalamus and periventricular gray matter. Corticotropin (ACTH) and vasopressin (vp) may play roles in short-term memory and long-term learning. Human or rat brain originates from the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus, which is unrelated to pituitary ACTH. The vasopressin synthesis site is in the anterior hypothalamic lobes, mainly in supraoptic and paraventricular nucleus. It is reasonable to assume that impairment of the WK sign may lead to a lack of ACTH or vp, resulting in memory impairment. This article studies the effect of thiamine deficiency on the concentration of AC-TH and VP in rats.
