李宗仁于1949年去美国。北平解放前夕携眷去台的史学家萧一山1960年应美国国务院之邀访美。时外传李宗仁有回中国内地定居之意,美、台方面便对李氏加强监视,一时间李氏寓所亲友却步,门可罗雀。而萧一山却不顾环境险恶与外界阻挠,毅然到李寓拜访。李宗仁认为在世态炎凉的时势下,萧的来访是极义气可贵的。后李终于冲破艰险返回大陆,他在自己的《回忆录》中,提及此段经历,十分感慨地写道:“我和一山是终身的朋友。”现将萧一山与李宗仁的交往简叙如下:
Li Zongren went to the United States in 1949. Xiao Yishan, a historian who came to Taiwan on the eve of the liberation of Peiping, was invited by the U.S. State Department in 1960 to visit the United States. Li Zongren was rumored to have settled back in mainland China. The United States and Taiwan have stepped up their vigilance against Lee. Xiao Yishan, despite the vicious environment and the outside world obstruct, resolutely to Li Zu visit. Li Zong-ren believes that in the cold climate of the world, Xiao’s visit is extremely precious and valuable. After Li finally broke through the difficult and dangerous land and returned to the mainland, he mentioned in his Memoirs the following passage with emotion: “I and I-Hill are lifelong friends.” The briefing on Xiao Yishan and Li Tsung-jen is as follows :
