陈映真的小说往往具有浓郁的忧郁氛围,主要表现为忧郁的主人公和相应的情感氛围,从而使作品呈现出诗化的美学特征。忧郁源于个人的情感和精神困境,它既是人物的个体生命形态,也是由社会出路断绝和历史远景匮乏所导致的精神气质和情感状态,具有时代的普遍性。陈映真小说早期忧郁氛围浓厚,后期则较为克制,这并不构成陈映早期是文学家、后期是政治家的分裂,实际上他一开始就将忧郁置于叙事结构之内,只是后来小说结构变得更为复杂。与所谓“左派忧郁”不同的是,在“反共文艺”和白色恐怖的年代,忧郁这类超出统制范围的情感结构,也暗含人的感性解放的潜能,因而具有情感政治的内涵。
