How big is big data？
Big data is the data set which can’t be captured， managed or disposed by conventional software tools within a certain time. The big data technique is a capability to get valuable information rapidly in different types of data. The techniques adapted to big data includes the Massively Parallel Processing （MPP） database， data mining grid， distributed file system（DFS）， distributed database（DDB）， cloud computing platform， internet and scalable storage systems.
Big data has the following four characteristics： great scale， high value， multiplexing and holographic visible.
What can big data do
The application examples of big data include big science， RFID（Radio Frequency IDentification）， sensor network equipment， astronomy， aerology， genomics， biology， big society data analysis， the internet file processing， making the internet search engine index， communication record details， military reconnaissance， SNS， commuting time prediction， medical record， photo image and image storage， as well as big scale of e-business， etc.
Big data is not only a state of vast amounts of data， and its corresponding data processing technique， but also a way of thinking， an important infrastructure. It may be an edge tool for us to manage the “city disease” such as traffic congestion， haze weather， medical care and food safety in the future. It will also open a larger window for the government to know the public opinions.
