In 1924 H. Stübel, a Ph.D. dean of the University of Jena in Germany, was later admitted to Chinese nationality in 1885- and was employed by the Department of Medicine of Tongji University in Shanghai as a professor of physiology at the university. In the summer of 1929, he spent his holidays examining the She ethnic groups living in the southern part of Zhejiang Province and the northern mountainous region of Fujian Province and wrote a survey of the She Shenees of Mount Qimu in Jingning County, Zhejiang Province. In 1931, Stubbs traveled to Hainan Island for the first time and conducted a scientific and systematic investigation of the living conditions and material culture of ethnic groups along the route.
