编辑是适应精神文化领域里生产和消费的社会化发展需要而逐步形成的社会分工。编辑活动是存在于传播媒介之中的,以沟通协调、传者(作者)和受众(读者)的供需关系为基本目的;以发现、选择、组织、优化精神文化产品为主要职能的一种文化专业活动。因此,编辑活动不属于物质生产活动而属于社会文化活动。在社会文化活动中又不同于著述、教育、科研、文艺等一般的精神文化活动,而是一种特殊的社会文化活动。正是这样的特殊性,才使得以编辑活动为研究对象的编辑学具有成为一门独立学科的必要和可能。 编辑学学科建设的进程,已经并将继续证明,是否认真地研究编辑活动的特殊性,关系到编辑学生存和发展的基础。
