Serine / threonine kinases are present in all known herpesviruses and have multiple functions that are involved in the whole process of a viral infection, in particular the virus’s interaction with the body. The main role of the two types of conservative herpesvirus serine / threonine kinases (HSV-HS13 UL13 kinase and US3 kinase) in viral infection is highlighted. Both are involved in regulating the expression of cellular and viral genes, mediating viral capsid export and immune evasion. Although these kinases have different effects on virus replication in cultured cells in vitro, they are important for the virulence of the virus and, therefore, can be used as targets for the design of antiviral drugs.
