The founders of a high-tech company in Silicon Valley believe that the development of science may put mankind in a nightmare world in which the super-smart machines will exterminate mankind. Bill Joye, Sun Microsystems’ chief scientist, published an article in Wired magazine calling on technical experts to reconsider the ethical issues posed by ongoing scientific innovation. Joey writes: “We were pushed into the new millennium without planning, without control, and without pause. The last chance to exercise control-the critical point to ensure fail-safety-was rapidly approaching.” Joe This essay from Iran is a rare and hearsive cry from the boom in the high-tech industry, usually without any plan, with technological advances bringing prosperity to the “new economy.” The reason why Joey’s essay is thought-provoking is the author’s authority in the field of technology. Joey, a prominent computer science researcher who developed the early Unix operating system and later led the development of software technologies such as Java, is one of the two presidents of the U.S. Presidential Advisory Board responsible for studying the future of information technology. Joey’s concerns about the rapidly changing technology are concentrated in three areas: First, robots with “thinking” abilities. In just 30 years, the robot’s thinking ability may be 100 million times higher than the current robot. Joey believes that this robot will lay the foundation for the emergence of an intelligent, robotic species capable of self-replication.
