曾被评为全国植树造林先进单位的屏边苗族自治县西沙乡,坚持植树造林二十余年,以林业为突破口,带动了山区经济的发展。现在,全乡山绿林茂人增收,人均收入由一九七八年前的五十多元,增加到一九八六年的两百多元,增长四倍多,农牧副业也有较大的发展。坚持常年植树造林西沙乡是个苗族、汉族和彝族杂居的边远山乡。这里气候温凉、雨量充沛、湿度大,适宜发展杉木林。在一九六四年前,全乡近千双眼睛只盯在每人平均六分的水田上,而人均拥有三十多亩的山地。
