Fifty years ago, we knew that there was a relationship between obesity and hypertension, but not obesity causes high blood pressure, and only susceptible persons develop high blood pressure. A review in the 1969 issue of Circulation showed a positive correlation between blood pressure and body weight, with systolic and obesity being more closely related to diastolic blood pressure. This is the rule all over the world. Studies in Norway and the Framing-ham area of the United States have shown that most people with hypertension are obese. Women have a greater relationship between high blood pressure and obesity, especially among women under the age of 60, and those with a family history of hypertension. In the United States, many obese people, a survey of 10,000 people showed that 60% of the body weight exceeded the normal 20%.
