许慎于汉和帝永元十二年(公元一00年)完成了《说文解字》(以下简称《说文》)一书的写作,其子许冲于建光元年(公一二一年)上《说文表》,使得《说文》一书广泛流传至今。世传《说文》的版本有三种:“我们现在所能见到的最早本子是唐代的残写本,只剩下‘木’部的一八八字,只占整个《说文》九三五三字的不及五十分之一。一般认为是写于九世纪二十年代唐穆宗时”。二是南唐时期徐错撰就的《说文解字系传》四十卷,称为小徐本。三是北宋初徐弦等奉旨校订的《说文解字》,称为大徐本。大、小徐本(以下简称二徐本)是东汉许填《说文解字》流传至今最为完整的两个版本。
