Simulation software for simple or complex carburizing processes for low-alloy steels has been developed, namely the carbon diffusion model and the carbon profile for producing a product. Using cheap desktop computer software, supposing that the software used is sufficiently efficient and accurate, virtually months of computer simulation can actually be substituted for the desire to take months of testing. The two procedures discussed here deal with the most common heat treatment: carburizing and quenching low-alloy steels. The issue of CARBCALC discussed in this issue is a finite element carbon diffusion model that predicts directed carbon penetration into steel.
