Objective To investigate the relationship between transient ischemic attack (TIA) and plasma homocysteine (Hcy) and uric acid. Methods Hcy, folic acid, vitamin B12 and uric acid were determined in 66 TIA patients and 69 healthy controls. Results The levels of Hcy and uric acid in TIA patients were significantly higher than those in control group. The levels of folic acid and vitamin B12 were significantly different between TIA group and control group. Hcy concentration in patients with TIA was negatively correlated with folic acid and vitamin B12 levels; Conclusion Hcy and uric acid levels play an important role in the occurrence and development of TIA, and are independent risk factors. The decrease of plasma folic acid and vitamin B12 levels may lead to Hcy hyperlipidemia.
