It has developed and tested an airborne infrared scanning system that detects potential fires and determines the size and characteristics of the fire when smoke or darkness precludes people from gaining access to fire information. The Forest Fire Control Unit of the U.S. Agriculture and Forestry Bureau has used this initial system to work well to suppress the fire. During 1967, fire detection systems conducted flight tests, probing more than 600 targets and plotting their location. Developed and rated the only target qualification component for automatically identifying hot targets. In 1968, a second thermal target detector was installed to perform time-of-flight analysis of spectral signal differences and found that the system performance was improved. The suitability of the system is being tested in the eight thousand square kilometers of Montana in the western United States. The design, performance characteristics, and working methods of the unit are discussed, along with a discussion of its future requirements and requirements for documentation.
