2008年12月12日,全国重点文物保护单位河北怀来鸡鸣驿城抢修保护工程全面启动,国家将在三年内完成鸡鸣驿城的拆迁、文物维修等工作,预计总投资将达到4.6亿元左右。《鸡鸣驿城文物保护规划》由清华大学建筑设计研究院编制,2008年经国家文物局批复同意,并由河北省人民政府批准公布。作为国家重点文物维修项目,由河北省文物局会同张家口市和怀来县具体负责驿城抢修保护工作。河北省省委已将该工程列入省委领导议事纪要进行督办。河北省文物局成立了专家组,怀来县成立了鸡呜驿城抢修保护工程指挥部。河北省古建研究所受委
