This article describes the principles, implementation, and performance of a new fast analog-to-digital converter. The conversion is based on a voltage controlled oscillator fed on a digital frequency discriminator. A 4-bit experimental circuit consisting of microwave components was successfully coded at 10MHz sinusoidal signal at 40MHz frequency.
