In March 2006, Avery Hairston was a 14-year-old freshman who had just watched Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. Most kids would have felt powerless to prevent the future that fills with global warming, melting ice caps and changing weather patterns. But Avery knew that he didn't want his grandchildren to say: you were right there and could have done something, but didn’t do enough.
Therefore, Avery and a group of his friends got together to create RelightNY, a program that runs on a simple concept that everyone doing something small together can have a big impact. That mobilizes thousands of young people to combat climate change in their communities.
"Something like global warming is kind of hard to wrap your head around," he said. "But a simple thing like changing a light bulb is empowering. We’re really tackling a global issue."
Avery and his RelightNY team quickly began to visit one apartment at a time and educate fellow New Yorkers about their energy use, asking their neighbors to switch from incandescent bulbs to CFL bulbs. In order to draw attention to the environmental issues, they began to donate CFL bulbs to community members. In the past two years, they have raised enough money to donate 30,000 CFL bulbs to low-income housing in New York City. It not only helps low income families save money on utility costs, but also combats climate change and reduces carbon emission.
Recently, Avery realized that schools in New York City are filled with his volunteers and his young volunteers could be mobilized on school and one classroom at a time. Therefore, He partnered with a local NGO Children for Children Foundation to provide a K-12 curriculum in order to educate students on the importance of switching to CFL bulbs and the impact of the change to CFL bulbs can have on the earth's environment.
Children throughout the NYC area are now able to form Relight teams with their friends, and search online for a building that they are willing to go and convince residents living in the selected building to make a switch. With the right information, they can help encourage all New Yorkers to switch to CFL bulbs.
The greatest success, Hairston said, has been the simplest one — enabling people to make big changes in their lives through the quick changing of a light bulb.
Hairston hopes to stir an international movement of installing CFL bulbs in all homes—first in New York, then the rest of the country, and, indeed, the rest of the world.
RelightNY is a great example of individual responsibility, and collective action. It gives groups the power to self organize and achieve seemingly unachievable tasks.
