According to the World Bank’s list of the richest countries in the world, Singapore ranks 27th among the 35 richest countries. Its per capita gross domestic product stood at US $ 7,900 in 1987 and US $ 9,100 in 1988, and according to the latest official estimates of the country’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, in 1989 it reached about US $ 10,000. Singapore enjoyed a very fast economic growth. Its GDP grew at an average annual rate of 7.1% in 10 years. Despite a decline in production in 1985, its gross domestic product showed the highest growth in 1988 and 1989: Respectively 11% and 9.2%. According to the forecast by the Merrill Lynch Singapore Branch of the U.S. consultancy, Singapore’s GDP will grow by 8.5% in 1990 and by 7-7.5% in 1991.
