11月23日,由中国科学院办公厅组织,中央在京新闻媒体的数十名记者,考察了中国科学院古脊椎动物与古人类研究所(以下简称古脊椎所)进入国家知识创新工程试点两年来的情况。大家看到这个创建于1929年,我国唯一的专门从事古脊椎动物学、古人类学及相关生物地层学研究的学术机构,经过几代人的不懈努力,已形成为具有较强的学科实力、较高的国际知名度和良好的发展潜力的研究所。1999年12月,古脊椎所新一届领导班子上任,平均年龄37岁的新班子清醒地认识到自己肩负的责任与历史使命。他们深化机制、体制的改革,凝练科学目标,向开放、流动、规范、高效、具有国际水准的国立研究所的目标前进,先期进入中国科学院创新工程试点行列。两年来,全所干部职工在所新的领导班子的领导下,改革创新、知难而进,取得了四个方面的较大进展:
