A team from the United States used fluorite crystals to make a new type of optical fiber. Used in conjunction with Bell Labs’ semiconductor laser sources, which reduce pulsation in the fiber, it transmits 480 km of optical signals without a repeater amplifier. The original optical fiber without relay
