This story hides its secrets under plain surface, just as life itself. The subtle story is related to the narrative of the white-painted technique adopted by the author. This narrative is not to be exaggerated, nor does it directly reveal the subjective emotions of the author, but the appealing details are like twinkling eyes filled with suggestive meanings. At the beginning of the funeral, Mr. Bailey’s widow, Sarah, wore beige shirts in plain gray skirts and pleats, bare bare legs, black high heel sandals under her feet, no hats on her head, Tied in the back. In this depiction, Sarah gives us the impression that we are a young woman (how much her “thick” hair suggests). What was troubling, however, was the sheer dress she had at her husband’s funeral. We could not help but wonder what kind of woman Sarah was, what kind of relationship she had with her dead husband, and how they had relationships in their previous lives. These questions were about how we would respond emotionally to Sarah. The authors of the story did not exemplify the impact, but instead buried the thread of these questions in an unmistakable narrative.
