1949年3月23日是中国历史上极不寻常的日子,毛泽东和中央机关离开西柏坡前往北平。这一天,天气晴朗,毛泽东兴致盎然地说:“今天是进京的日子,不睡觉也高兴啊。今天是进京‘赶考’嘛。进京‘赶考’去,精神不好怎么行呀!”周恩来被毛泽东的兴致所感染,笑道:“我们都应当考试合格,不要退回来。”毛泽东收起了笑容,郑重地说:“退回来就失败了。我们决不当李自成,我们都希望考个好成绩。”离开西柏坡10多天前,毛泽东在党的七届二中全会上用诗人般的语言讲述了一个深刻而严肃的哲理,他说:“可能有这样一些共产党人,他们是不曾被拿枪的敌人征服过的,他们在这些敌人面前不愧英雄的称号,但是经不起人们用糖衣裹着的炮弹的攻击,他们在糖弹面前要打败仗。我们必须预防这种情况。”
