汉武帝即位初年,即建元元年(公元前140年),征召天下贤良方正和有文学才能的人。各地士人、儒生纷纷上书应聘。东方朔也给汉武帝上书,《史记》中这样记载:“朔初入长安,至公车上书,凡用三千奏牍。公车令两人共持举其书,仅然能胜之。人主从上方读之,止,辄乙其处,读之二月乃尽。”也就是说,东方朔给汉武帝的上书,竟然用了三千片竹简,两个人才扛得起,汉武帝读了两个月才读完。
