今天的我们或许无法想像,在现代生活中司空见惯的玻璃,以其为原料制作而成的玻璃珠子,在公元前3000年的埃及是一种堪比宝石的贵重物品,由此发轫的玻璃文明在之后的几千年间归属于亚欧大陆的西端。在作为装饰和容器的两个领域,出于偏好不同,16世纪前的东西方文明因此分野为瓷器文明和玻璃文明。但是在建筑应用中,玻璃的作用是瓷器所不能替代的,这种不可代替性在一定程度上将因玻璃和瓷器而不同的东西方文明融为一体。
