The largest theater in Berlin, destroyed by U.S. planes during World War II, was recently rebuilt. To celebrate the reopening of the theater, Schiller’s play “William Tell” was staged. The script was directed by Frederick Fisten, winner of the national prize of the German Democratic Republic. After the script was staged, many controversies aroused in German literature and art circles. The issues in the debate generally fall into the following categories: What is the relevance of Schiller’s William Tell play to the German people today? Today’s play What should be performed; there are many excite words in the performance can not be deleted when the speech and other issues; these problems are nothing more than how to treat German literary heritage as a central issue.
