A study by Japan’s Agriculture and Food Research Agency (NARO) and Hamamatsu Medical University on mandarin orange in Japan found that eating more Satsuma could reduce the risk of developing diabetes and other lifestyle-related diseases. The special ingredient in satsuma is cryptochrome (beta-cryptoxanthin), an orange pigment. The higher the content of human skin cryptoxanthin, the less susceptible to diabetes, non-alcoholic liver dysfunction and other diseases. It is widely believed that the higher the sugar content in fruit, the more likely it is to develop diabetes, but the finding of this study is just the opposite: sugar content is not a disease predictor but a disease prophylaxis.
