近年来，借助于高温高压实验技术，地球科学家们发现构成地幔的许多矿物随着压力的增加会发生矿物结构的改变，由此可以推断出深地幔矿物存在形。这些相变地幔主不连续面的形成有关，因而对相变的热力学及其相变动力学的研究可以为地幔对流及其热演化提供约束条件。
