《大公报》的悖论,是报纸不能不为人民说话又须得让它控制在当局所能容忍的极致的范围内。在这种紧张的张力下,《大公报》试图于刀锋上开辟“新路径”——即秉良心批评当局,使报纸不致失掉读者。其“最高目的”是“即使报纸有政治意识而又不参加实际政治”(胡政之)。这与中国资产阶级自由主义“教主”的胡适对政治的态度是“不感兴趣的兴趣”;
The paradox of Ta Kung Pao is that newspapers can not but speak to the people and must keep it under the ultimate scope that the authorities can tolerate. Under this intense tension, Ta Kung Pao attempts to open up a “new path” to the blade front - that is, to criticize the authorities with its conscience so that newspapers will not lose its readership.
