1929年12月2日,青年学者裴文中在周口店龙骨山发现了第一具完整的北京人头盖骨化石。开启了先祖们尘封数十万年的文明之门,为北京人的存在提供了坚实的化石依据。这个发现曾被盛誉为“中国近代科学所取得的第一块世界级金牌”。此后的半个多世纪,历经几代科学家的努力,发现的北京人化石计有:完整或比较完整的头盖骨6具,头骨残片14块,面骨6块,下颌骨15件,牙齿157颗以及断裂的股骨、胫骨、肱骨、锁骨、腕骨等人体骨骼碎片10余件,分属下40余个男女老幼个体。
On December 2, 1929, Pei Wenzhong, a young scholar, discovered the first complete human skull fossil in Beijing at Longkou Mountain, Zhoukoudian.
