《世说新语》乃南朝宋刘义庆部下诸名士所编，义庆集以成书。梁刘孝标注，纠正义庆之纰缪，尤为精核。《新语》是一部从汉到魏晋的历史资料，不仅记载了五六百人的风貌、思想、言行，还记录了那个时代的社会风俗、习尚。《新语》中的文学论，尤其为研究文学的人所看重。《新语》中又有修辞学，也可供探索。张万起、刘尚慈的《＜世说新语＞今译》注意吸收当代学术研究成果，反映当代学术研究水平，译文有文彩，有韵味。
