In this paper expressions are derived for estimating the critical stresses of lateral buckling of 工-shaped beams under various loading conditions and all the values of the coefficients involved in the expressions have been worked out. It is pointed out that large discrepancies have been found to exist in the values calculated by the formulas for lateral buckling of steel beams given in the specification for the design of steel structures (TJ 17-74) of our country. More accurate and reasonable formulas for lateral buckling of 工-shaped beam are proposed for practical use.
