This article describes an optical device for monitoring the movement of a transparent liquid in a thin walled glass capillary of constant inner diameter. The device’s electrical signal changes in direct proportion to the distance the capillary moves in the air-to-air interface. The application of this optics to the measurement of small shrinkage of the volume (with thin monomer film polymerization) is outlined.
