在深孔钻削中,根据加工孔径的不同,无论采用枪钻法、内排屑法或喷射钻削法,钻杆均承受着轴向力和扭矩的共同作用。同时,其内孔还要输送切削液或者排除切屑。因此,如何恰当选择横截面的尺寸也是很重要的。当钻杆截面选取得比较小时,由于刚度不足,会使刀具损坏或影响加工孔的光洁度,还会影响切屑的排除。为了弥补上述的缺陷,在生产中往往不得不降低走刀量或切削速度,但这不是理想的办法。所以,钻杆截面尺寸恰当与否将直接影响生产率和加工质量,这点已被实践所证明。
