Objective To investigate the effect of antiepileptic drugs on bone metabolism in children. Study design Case-control study. 20 patients (AEDs group) with long-term anti-epileptic drugs were the patients and other participants. The longest time was 6 years and the shortest was 0.5 years. Fifteen patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy who had not started taking the medication were non-AEDs. 30 healthy children as normal control group. Determination of AKP, bone acid phosphatase (TR-ACP) were Kind-King improved method and Bessey-Lowry method. Calcium, phosphorus determination with 400E automatic biochemical analyzer. Results The AKP activities of ADEs group, non-ADEs group and normal control group were 190 ± 47, 144 ± 38 and 1.43 ± 40 IU / L, respectively. There was significant difference between the former and the latter two groups (P <0.05). AKP activity> 200IU / L accounted for 55%, low calcium, low phosphorus accounted for 10%. TR-ACP activity, Ca, P content between the groups no significant difference. Conclusion Anti-epileptic drugs have some effect on bone metabolism in children.
