-Based on the meteorological data from 37 weather stations in South China during May 1978, analysis has been made of the mean sea-land breeze circulation and its relation to the daily precipitation change along the coast of South China in May.It is shown from the analysis that there is a noticeable sea-land breeze circulation at the height of 600-900 m along the coastal area, penetrating inland about 100 km. During the sea breeze period, the temperature gradient points to the sea and the pressure gradient to the inland with a convergence belt over the inland. And during the land breeze period, the reverse takes place to the temperature-pressure gradient with a convergence line found off the coast. These convergence belts correspond with the areas of torrential rain, creating diurnal changes in precipitation. The warm or cold advection induced by the sea-land breeze and the cloud cover caused by the convergence are found to have an abating effect on the sea-land breeze itself.
