陈德霖被京剧界尊称为老夫子,梅、程,荀、尚四大名旦都曾向其问艺,在舞台上,直到晚年,声誉不衰,观众说他是“青衫泰斗”。可是,谁能想到他青年时人家叫他“石头”,一说是乳名,一说是绰号,反正不是聪明之意。清末他曾和名老生许荫棠、旦角孙怡云合演,屡为孙所窘。他立志非唱好不可,书上记载他“辍演发奋勤学……喊嗓十余年,无一日间断”,再登场时声震九城关。提起杨小楼来,都知道是杨派武生创始者,创立了“武戏文唱”的演法,京剧界尊为一代宗师,可是青年时的舞台遭遇也是坎坷不平。他坐科于小荣椿科班,出科后仅为武行而已,并且开打时常把刀枪把子掉在台上,屡占倒好。旁人挖苦他是“象牙
