滨了胡晓琼同志《慎用 had better》一文,深感获益匪浅。要想正确使用这一习语确实不是件容易的事,现就 had better 的主要用法及几种句式谈谈我的见解。had better 常用来表示建议、劝告或间接命令。可作“得...才好”、“最好”、“应该”解(这里的 better 并没有“比...更好”意思,也没有“比较”概念)。其作用相当于情态动词,没有人称、数、时态的变化。had better 有时可以说成 had best,不过没有前者普遍,仅是语气稍强。

Had better sometimes can be said to have best, but not the former is generally only slightly stronger tone.
