The periodic loading of lumped LC elements in ordinary microstrip transmission lines enables the construction of one-dimensional metamaterials with distinctive and specific properties. Experiments demonstrate that waves propagate in this structure with phase velocity and group velocity The left-handed passband in the opposite direction has a negative refractive index and an energy gap with an average refractive index of 0.
