“周谷城同志是中国共产党的亲密战友。几十年来,他与中国共产党的三代领导人都有密切交往且忠诚合作。”这是周谷城先生在沪病逝后,《人民日报》于1996年11月21日发表的《周谷城同志生平》中对他的一段评价。由于他出生于湖南益阳,与毛泽东同是湖南湘江畔的乡亲,早年又曾同在湖南第一师范任教,因而他成了上海与毛泽东个人接触最多的人之一。毛泽东来上海,常要约见他。他俩在一起畅谈历史、哲学、旧体诗等,范围所涉极广,又极风趣。其意义深远,教益无穷,如春风化雨,令人难忘。
