In the vertical (90-0) wood cutting process, often encounter two different cutting conditions: radial cutting and chord cutting. This paper mainly studies the difference of cutting force and chip deformation in two kinds of cutting conditions. The selected test material is five kinds of wood commonly used in Norway: pine, spruce, birch, poplar and oak. Tests show that there are differences between the chip deformation and the extent of damage and the cutting forces in both cases. The cutting force under radial cutting fluctuates greatly and the chips destroy more. The peak of cutting force increases with the increase of cutting thickness, but the increase of oak is bigger than the other four kinds of test materials.
