在全国各地的中小型锻造厂和锻造车间里,有大量烧煤的锻造加热炉。其中,有不少锻造加热炉普遍存在着耗煤量大、热效率低、烟尘严重、操作条件差等缺点,这与当前消除环境污染、节约能源是很不适应的。为了解决这一问题,很多工厂不断地对锻造加热炉进行改造,建造了不少节煤、无烟、操作方便的新型锻造炉。上海汽车发动机厂建造的往复式消烟、除尘、节煤锻造炉就是其中的一种。它是在无烟反射炉基础上通过不断改革而成功的。此种锻造炉与一般无烟反射炉比较,有下列的优点:烟尘浓度下降70%;煤耗下降了20%;还能充分利用余热;并能减轻劳动强度。
