The United States Bureau of Mines has developed an optical sensor for the long-distance detection of methane in coal mines (referred to as remote methane photometer). This optical detector can be used to detect CH_4 overrun of the working face or to detect the CH_4 concentration difficult to enter the zone and the danger zone. The photometer can also be mounted on moving mining cars to detect the methane concentration in the methane stream in the wind flow or near the roof. This article describes the work of a photometer prototype based on the principle of differential absorption in the near-infrared spectral region.
