在中国,戏剧美学还是一门年轻的学科。上世纪80年代中期,在美学热方兴未艾之时,它依然是一个薄弱的分支。朱狄先生在1984年6月出版的《当代西方美学》一书中指出:“也许是许多戏剧美学家已经过多地把视线转向电影(甚至包括电视),因此西方当代戏剧美学的文章非常少见,一些有关西方现代流派戏剧的文章常常以介绍情节来代替理论论述,有时几乎是一张剧作家作品目录。也许是由于理论总是要落在实践的后面,也许是现代派的戏剧理论在美学理论上很难加以总结,我们至今尚未在西方的权威杂志上看到有关当代戏剧美学
