西康玉兰为落叶小乔木,属于国家三级重点保护植物,其分布范围狭窄,处于渐危状态。1987年在贵州省水城县境内首次发现有零星分布,分布面积约24平方千米,共计500余株。 西康玉兰树形美观,花大、洁白而清香,花期长,有较高的观赏价值,是庭园绿化和美化的优良树种。但目前有关西康玉兰种子育苗的研究末见报道。
