从1973年世界上第一台巨型计算机——“伊利阿克-4”在美国宇航局艾姆斯研究中心投入使用以来。巨型机的发展十分迅速。到1985年底,世界上安装使用的巨型机已有165台,1986年增加到258台。预计1990年将达到675台。美国和日本是当前巨型机市场的主要竞争对手,苏联、法国和英国也在竭力追赶。美国生产巨型机的公司主要是克雷公司。控制数据公司、ETA公司和IBM公司。克雷公司是英国最早生产巨型机的公司之一。
Since 1973, the world’s first giant computer - “伊利阿克 -4” has been put into use in the NASA Ames Research Center. The development of supercomputers is very rapid. By the end of 1985, 165 supercomputers had been installed and used in the world, up from 258 in 1986. It is estimated that in 1990 it will reach 675 units. The United States and Japan are the main competitors in the current supercomputer market. The Soviet Union, France and Britain are also trying their best to catch up. The U.S.-made giant is mainly Cray. Control Data Corporation, ETA Corporation and IBM Corporation. Cray is one of the earliest companies in the UK to manufacture supercomputers.
