在Internet上寻找你想要的东西是相当费时费力的事。那你怎么办呢?方法很简单:让Internet自己来做,幸运的是,现在有了一类新的搜索引擎可以满足你的需求。在WWW到来之前,你想在网上作查询时只有很少的几种选择——FTP上的Archie,Gopher上的Veronica,以及利用数据库的WAIS。虽然相对来说他们也是有效的,但它们的界面不够友好,信息量也很有限,近来Web的飞速发展使得它们濒临崩溃。
Finding what you want on the Internet can be quite time-consuming and laborious. So what do you do? The solution is simple: let the Internet do it yourself, but fortunately, there is now a new class of search engines to meet your needs. Before the World Wide Web came in, there were very few options you would like to make online for queries - Archie on FTP, Veronica on Gopher, and WAIS on databases.
