维尔默的哲学事业始终处于与本雅明、阿多诺和哈贝马斯的持续对话之中。作为哈贝马斯的助手,维尔默是批判理论的交往理论转向和语言学转向的主要贡献者,但是,他并未像哈贝马斯那样在这个方向上推进并彻底化,而是试图借助于阿多诺的音乐哲学的经验,对交往理性加以限制,并将这一限制从认知理论扩展到社会政治领域,认为审美主体和政治决断是交往合理性不可穷尽的领域。不过,无论是审美主体还是政治决断,维尔默都试图通过交往理论的彻底化而将其容纳在理性的范围内。因此,维尔默的工作最终乃是对交往理性的捍卫。
