The authors used biopsy, monoclonal antibody and immunoperoxidase techniques to quantitatively study 77 different types of glomerular disease biopsies. The glomeruli were examined for T lymphocytes, monocytes, total leukocytes and other monocyte subsets. Twenty-seven of the 77 patients had no proliferative endoderm under light microscopy, 32 had capillary intracellular proliferation, and 21 had extracapillary extracranial glomerular disease. Within the non-proliferative group, few white blood cells were found within the globule. In contrast, in renal biopsies with proliferating cells, particularly those with crescentic renal disease, there is evidence of increased glomerular cells. These cells are: total autologous cells, monocytes / macrophages, as well as too few T lymphocytes and cytotoxic T lymphocytes / suppressor T lymphocytes; helper T lymphocytes / induced T lymphocytes
