The Cantonese Opera Research Program of the Department of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong will hold the first International Symposium on Cantonese Opera Music in Hong Kong from January 20 to January 24, 1997 with dozens of representatives from Singapore, the United States, Guangzhou, Xi’an, Beijing and Hong Kong experts and scholars to participate. There have been quite a few international symposiums on opera music, which have been held in China for the most part. However, this is the first time that an international symposium entitled “Cantonese Opera Music” has been held. Apart from Hong Kong and Guangzhou, two Cantonese opera development areas, in other regions or countries, there are many
