In some cases, the incremental permeability of the steel member varies linearly with a direct, reversible relationship to the applied mechanical stress. Using this principle, the tensile stress of long ferromagnetic members can be measured with an accuracy of about 10 N / mm 2. This research led to the industrial application of the Tesiomag type strain gauge. Assessing initial or residual stresses in buildings is a difficult task because of the many inaccuracies involved, such as the use of various simplifying assumptions and the inaccurate use of coefficients in the calculations.
